How To Go From Skinny Kid To Fat Adult Without Even Trying

No kid says to themselves, “When I grow up I want to be fat just like my dad.” So how does it happen? The answer struck me last night about an hour before bedtime, when I started craving something sweat in a bad way. 

April 1st I decided to lose 15 pounds that has accumulated over the last four months. Without me even knowing, I had started a bad habit of eating something sweat before bedtime to medicate the blues away. When I started doing it, I cannot recall. How it began, I do not know. Don’t look at me that way; can you remember the birth of all your bad habits? 

Here’s my best guess. Four months ago, I seem to remember my favorite chocolate chip cookies on sale. Completely out of character, I bought a bag and actually brought them into the sanctity of my own home. A whole bag of my favorite cookies right there in arms reach every night. How dumb is that? So, I started medicating with two cookies every night before bed. That’s 170 extra empty calories in my tummy before sleeping. Well you guessed it. After the bag was long gone, I had established a pre-bedtime sugar craving which I obediently fed every night for the last 120 days. That’s 24,000 extra, useless calories sitting in my horizontal body, but who’s’ fooling who, some nights it was more than just two cookies, maybe three, and would you look at that, a well formed, little belly appears as if by magic. But’s it’s not magic, it’s math. 

And that’s how you go from a skinny kid to a fat adult without even trying. Somewhere hidden in your dark past, you decided to buy a bag of chocolate chip cookies which began a sugar addiction. Over the years of feeding the addiction, little by little, you grew into the roundish silhouette of your father. Maybe your daddy ate cookies with you so he would not feel alone in his addiction. Kind of like, “hey kid, wanna go for a smoke?” My point is, these little addictions are clever and insidious. Starting them is effortless, ending them is dam painful. Who would have thought that it could be so hard to stop eating two cookies before bed every night. You stand there in your jammys, staring in an open cupboard feeling depressed. Your best friends are gone and they took their cookies home. 

I am surprised how powerful craving can be, especially before bed. Craving has the ability to stir up all kinds of negative emotions. The good news is, they do not last. If you can get through the first three days, cravings will subside. Maybe one day there will be a Cookie Support Group, “Hi, my name is Ron, and I’m a cookie-oholic.”

I agree!  Before the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) last year, I just threw it all to the wind and decided I wasn't gonna be strict...  Ate more sweets than I should have and it turned into a bad habit!  I have only gained a couple of lbs, but that's still 10# more than I need to be carrying!  And I definitely don't feel as good or healthy after eating the junk, either.  So, now I'm working to clean my diet back up.  I'll be fasting next week, which I know will help the most.  It's so easy to fall into old patterns like that.  None of us are immune no matter how "strong" we think we are.

Cindi, keep us posted on the fast. Your right about feeling healthy. I can be sure that if I have gained 10 pounds of body fat, I have also ingested toxins. Part of the suffering of weight loss people don't think about is detoxification. Think I will post on that.

Don't worry Tonje!  I use to think 50 was old and now I'm getting ready to turn 52 this summer and it seems young...  So now I go by the thinking that "old" is always 15 years older than I am!  
Ron, I will keep you posted.  Where chocolate chip cookies are your downfall, M&M's and dark chocolate candy is mine!  I have tried for years to be very health conscious but that stuff tends to tempt me way too much.  I think it will always be a constant battle to fight those toxins.  I just had a tooth pulled a few weeks ago due to an abscess and I refused to have a root canal.  My conventional dentist kept pushing for a root canal but I know those can be dangerous to the body later on so I found a holistic dentist instead.  The site is healing well and I'll have a bridge done later, but I know detoxing with a fast will be one of the best things I can do right now.  I also have been struggling some mentally/spiritually and I know fasting always brings my attention back to God and gives me clearer thinking, so it's a win-win situation!

I developed a habit of eating cornish pasty and chips at about 3:30pm in the afternoon to breakup the work day and help me get through the day.  Then one day I hadn't planned to go for a cornish pasty and chips, but all of a sudden I had the images of cornish pasty and chips as if to say it's coming to that time again, lets go get the pasty.  I thought I'd nip it in the bud and keep myself in control of when I go to the canteen.  It was actually quite a surreal moment to see that the images were testament to the power of habit.
