My Dynamic Duo For Working Out

Here I go again. Giving away all my secrets!

If you hit the gym on a regular bases then you know there are endless pre, during and post workout products on the market. I am convinced mine is the healthiest and most effective, and here’s why.

My drink of choice while working out is fresh veggie juice. And the mix I use seems to have the perfect blend of sugars and nutrients so as not to load the digestive system and to provide crazy amounts of energy while hitting the weights. When in the gym I work out for about an hour and its fast and hard. On those rare days that I forget my veggie juice I can feel the difference.

 Something to think about: when you are working out, the muscles are swelling and need to be hydrated. When you drink veggie juice just imagine the vitamins, minerals and micronutrients that are being loaded into every cell of your body.


My favorite Workout Juice Recipe

5 carrots
2 apples
1 lemon
2 garlic cloves
1 red pepper
½ a bag of Spinach
1 tomato

This will make two bottles, one for today, and one for tomorrow.

Be prepared for the gawkers. And I thought it was because I’m so handsome, until they have the courage to ask me, “What the heck is that you are drinking?” Oh well.

Now my post workout choice is more a smoothie then a drink. And it’s loaded with protein to heal the micro-tears in the muscle. How does bodybuilding increase and harden muscles? By overloading the muscle you create micro-tears and when those tears heal, more muscle tissue is formed. To maximize that process, research has shown that there is a 30 minute post workout window  where the body can best take the full advantage of getting protein right into the muscle. To make the best use of your hard-earned workouts, intake protein within 30 minutes of walking out of the gym.


My Post-Workout Smoothie Recipe
1 cup of low fat almond milk
1 scoop of all natural vanilla whey protein powder
1 heaping tablespoon of vanilla Greek yogurt
1 banana
½ cup of frozen strawberries
½ cup of frozen blueberries

If you are trying to lose weight then eliminate the banana and yogurt. The berries are rich in antioxidants and the natural carbs help transport protein right into the muscle. My smoothie is waiting for me in the car, and in the summer I keep it in a small cooler.

As we get older it can take longer for the body to repair from those hardcore workouts, but this dynamic duo will turn the clock back and help your body recover for that next visit to the gym. And they both taste great.
